Northern
Railways' Lucknow Division, formerly part of Oudh Rohilkhand Railway
up to and later, part of East Indian Railway from 1925 to 1952,
caters to rail transport requirement of the most populous state
of the country, serving 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh with a total
route of 1458.94 kms. The area, which is politically very sensitive
and vulnerable to rallies and public demonstrations, is quite demanding
and the division has to maintain continuous preparedness in its
pre-emptive manoeuvres and damage control exercises to keep the
system fluid and absolutely mobile. Predominantly, a passenger division
dealing with about 348 passenger-carrying trains, the division provides
that vital link between Eastern and Northern states for the traffic
booked for diesel route, and also serves as an alternative passage
for the traffic for electrified route during the period of disruption
on electrified territory on Allahabad division.
In the recent past, the need to upgrade
the system has been appreciated. Lot of infrastructural improvement
works have been sanctioned and are in various stages of progress.
The doubling and electrification of the critical routes have also
been sanctioned and are in progress. With the creation of new Zones,
Lucknow Division has become the gateway to the entire Northern Railway.
Being a passenger- dominated Division,
a host of initiatives have been taken to improve the passenger amneties
on the Division. Two stations of the Division viz. Lucknow and Varanasi,
have been included in the list of stationes to be developed as World
Class stations on Indian Railways. Conceptual reports for both these
stations have been submitted.
Notwithstanding inherent constraints,
deficiencies and shortcomings in the system, Lucknow division is
making all possible efforts in achieving execellence in all sphere
of railway operation. The Division has scaled new heights in critical
areas of almost all departments and has achieved best ever performance
during 2005-06. The division has set its goal for the current year
and is committed to sacle new highs in the times to come.
